| Jews In America: Our Story |
In September 1654,23 Jews from Recife, Brazil, fleeing the Portuguese Inquisition, landed in the harbor of New Amsterdam (later to become New York City). They were not the first Jews to set foot in North America, but the group's success in obtaining official permission to remain in the colony set a precedent for other Jews who followed in their footsteps. Two out of the 23 refugees stayed and planted the seeds of what would become the first American Jewish community.This web site tells the story of how that community grew. It is a portrait of American Jews— and a portrait of America.The artifacts on display on this web site are drawn from the library, archival, and museum collections of the five partner organizations of the Center for Jewish History. They represent only a small sample of the resources that provide scholars and the public with the opportunity for in-depth exploration of the American Jewish experience and other topics in Jewish history. |
